15 Dates for the long distance couple

I know when I am long distance, the dates can start to run together.

“Facetime again?”

If you stick to just texting or just facetime, then long distance boredom and resentment can start to form. There are fun and interesting things you can do as partners, through the restrictions of distance, that help to squelch that anxiety.

So next time when:

“My friends are going out and I’m stuck in front of a computer screen talking again!”

Try pulling one of these out!

  1. FROM SHELF to CHEF:

    • Make a grocery list together, facetime grocery shop, come home, and facetime cook a meal together. (we did this a lot!)
  2. SCRABBLE:

    • Play speed scrabble (it’s basically Bananagrams) we just took out random letters, the same amount each, then played.

  3. CROSSWORD:

    • Work on a crossword together!

  4. CHESS/ CHECKERS:

    • Total Penelope moment, but I always wanted to improve my chess game.

  5. HANG OUT WITH FRIENDS:

    • I would have friends over and put iPad Jason on the coffee table. He got to know my friends, and we would all drink wine. It was almost like he was really there.

  6. GROUP SKYPE:

    • You can log onto skype with more than one person, same with google hangout. We would play music with J’s sister.
  7. READ A BOOK

    • Pick a book, and take turns reading out loud to each other. J used to read to me,  it was 4 hrs later in NC, and it opened up such thoughtful discussion in our relationship. He would also read to me when I was suffering from a migraine and could not look at a screen. I cherish those times.
  8. JAM SESSION

    • Whether you play an instrument, sing, or you need to play a Karaoke track, it’s a fun change of pace to sing together.
  9. PODCASTS

  10. SPOTIFY

    • Create a Spotify playlist together. Share previously made lists with each other. (J would also burn his lists onto CDs for me, and send them in the mail. I have an old car so those CDs were clutch (pun intended!)
  11. ORIGAMI

    • Watch an origami tutorial online together and create something at the same time. Take this a step further and make it a Chinese take-out night!
  12. DIY Tutorials

    • Complete a DIY task on your list together. Whether that be a mason jar utensil holder, a pallet board coffee table, or a make your own slime! Whatever you have on your list, make it together with your partner.
  13. PEOPLE WATCH

    • One time I was in the Philadelphia airport with ipad J, and we just people watched for about an hour. He is great at creating a humorous commentary for the world, and I tend to come up with scenarios for people’s lives (who, what, when, where, why.) Between the two of us, we had an hour’s worth of material.
  14. DRINK

    • Buy your favorite alcohol, wine, beer, whatever, and “share drinks” together. J and I did this with our favorite whiskey a few times. We would curl up with some nice bread and cheese, whiskey, music, and read our old love letters to each other.
  15. MEDITATE

    • I am all about some meditation. Meditating together can be so unifying and help keep you accountable each day. If interested, here is a great informational source to get you started.

  1. I would have never thought of this! It’s very helpful and inspiring as I find that I lean towards more long distance partnerships online than I do in my local area. I was always afraid that one party would lose interest but this gives me hope! lol

Thank you for sharing such great tips!

    1. oh long distance can TOTALLY work! J and I were long distance for a year before we got engaged, and we say “go for it!” It’s never IDEAL, but it can turn into an amazingly nourishing relationship (if you let it!) Thanks for reading!
